The Book of Amos

Chapter 3

1

Hear3 this word that the LORD hath spoken14 against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up52 from the land of Egypt, saying,2

2

You only have I known1 of all the families of the earth: therefore I will punish4 you for all your iniquities.

3

Can two walk4 together, except they be agreed?8

4

Will a lion roar4 in the forest, when he hath no prey? will a young lion cry4 6963 out of his den, if he have taken1 nothing?

5

Can a bird fall4 in a snare upon the earth, where no gin [is] for him? shall [one] take up4 a snare from the earth, and have taken4 nothing at all?2

6

Shall a trumpet be blown11 in the city, and the people not be afraid?4 shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done1 [it]?

7

Surely the Lord GOD will do4 nothing, but he revealeth1 his secret unto his servants the prophets.

8

The lion hath roared,1 who will not fear?4 the Lord GOD hath spoken,14 who can but prophesy?11

9

Publish54 in the palaces at Ashdod, and in the palaces in the land of Egypt, and say,3 Assemble10 yourselves upon the mountains of Samaria, and behold3 the great tumults in the midst thereof, and the oppressed in the midst thereof.

10

For they know1 not to do2 right, saith7 the LORD, who store6 up violence and robbery in their palaces.

11

Therefore thus saith1 the Lord GOD; An adversary [there shall be] even round about the land; and he shall bring down52 thy strength from thee, and thy palaces shall be spoiled.8

12

Thus saith1 the LORD; As the shepherd6 taketh55 out of the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear; so shall the children of Israel be taken out11 that dwell6 in Samaria in the corner of a bed, and in Damascus [in] a couch.

13

Hear3 ye, and testify54 in the house of Jacob, saith7 the Lord GOD, the God of hosts,

14

That in the day that I shall visit2 the transgressions of Israel upon him I will also visit1 the altars of Bethel: and the horns of the altar shall be cut off,8 and fall1 to the ground.

15

And I will smite52 the winter house with the summer house; and the houses of ivory shall perish,1 and the great houses shall have an end,1 saith7 the LORD.
