Chapter 13

1

A wise son [heareth] his father's instruction: but a scorner5 heareth1 not rebuke.

2

A man shall eat4 good by the fruit of [his] mouth: but the soul of the transgressors6 [shall eat] violence.

3

He that keepeth6 his mouth keepeth6 his life: [but] he that openeth wide6 his lips shall have destruction.

The soul of the sluggard desireth,102 and [hath] nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.29

A righteous [man] hateth4 lying: 8267 but a wicked [man] is loathsome,55 and cometh to shame.55

Righteousness keepeth4 [him that is] upright in the way: but wickedness overthroweth17 the sinner.

There is that maketh himself rich,102 yet [hath] nothing: 3605 [there is] that maketh himself poor,114 yet [hath] great riches.

The ransom of a man's life [are] his riches: but the poor6 heareth1 not rebuke.

9

The light of the righteous rejoiceth:4 but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.4

Only by pride cometh4 contention: but with the well advised12 [is] wisdom.

Wealth [gotten] by vanity shall be diminished:4 but he that gathereth6 by labour shall increase.55

Hope deferred30 maketh the heart sick:56 but [when] the desire cometh,6 [it is] a tree of life.

13

Whoso despiseth6 the word shall be destroyed:11 but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.29

The law of the wise [is] a fountain of life, to depart2 from the snares of death.

15

Good understanding giveth4 favour: but the way of transgressors6 [is] hard.

16

Every prudent [man] dealeth4 with knowledge: but a fool layeth open4 [his] folly.

17

A wicked messenger falleth4 into mischief: but a faithful ambassador [is] health.

18

Poverty and shame [shall be to] him that refuseth6 instruction: but he that regardeth6 reproof shall be honoured.29

19

The desire accomplished8 is sweet4 to the soul: but [it is] abomination to fools to depart2 from evil.

20

He that walketh6 with wise [men] shall be wise:4 but a companion6 of fools shall be destroyed.11

21

Evil pursueth17 sinners: but to the righteous good shall be repayed.17

22

A good [man] leaveth an inheritance55 to his children's children: and the wealth of the sinner6 [is] laid up7 for the just.

23

Much food [is in] the tillage of the poor: 7326 6 but there is [that is] destroyed12 for want of judgment.

24

He that spareth6 his rod hateth6 his son: but he that loveth6 him chasteneth him betimes.14

25

The righteous eateth6 to the satisfying of his soul: but the belly of the wicked shall want.4
