|2nd Samuel 16|
King James Bible
For, said4 Hushai, thou knowest1 thy father and his men, that they [be] mighty men, and they [be] chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field: and thy father [is] a man of war, and will not lodge4 with the people.
Behold, he is hid12 now in some pit, or in some [other] place: and it will come to pass, when some of them be overthrown2 at the first, that whosoever6 heareth1 it will say,1 There is a slaughter among the people that follow Absalom.
And he also [that is] valiant, 2428 whose heart [is] as the heart of a lion, shall utterly9 melt:11 for all Israel knoweth6 that thy father [is] a mighty man, and [they] which [be] with him [are] valiant men.
So shall we come1 upon him in some place where he shall be found,8 and we will light upon him as the dew falleth4 on the ground: and of him and of all the men that [are] with him there shall not be left8 so much as one.
And Absalom and all the men of Israel said,4 The counsel of Hushai the Archite [is] better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For the LORD had appointed14 to defeat53 the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring53 evil upon Absalom.
Now therefore send3 quickly, and tell54 David, saying,2 Lodge4 not this night in the plains 5679 of the wilderness, but speedily2 pass over;4 lest the king be swallowed up,29 and all the people that [are] with him.
And when Absalom's servants came4 to the woman to the house, they said,4 Where [is] Ahimaaz and Jonathan? And the woman said4 unto them, They be gone over1 the brook of water. And when they had sought17 and could not find1 [them], they returned4 to Jerusalem.
And it came to pass, after they were departed,2 that they came up4 out of the well, and went4 and told55 king David, and said4 unto David, Arise,3 and pass quickly over3 the water: for thus hath Ahithophel counselled1 against you.
And when Ahithophel saw1 that his counsel was not followed,8 he saddled4 [his] ass, and arose,4 and gat4 him home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order,17 and hanged11 himself, and died,4 and was buried11 in the sepulchre of his father.
And Absalom made1 Amasa captain of the host instead of Joab: which Amasa [was] a man's son, whose name [was] Ithra an Israelite, that went in1 to Abigail the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah Joab's mother.
And it came to pass, when David was come2 to Mahanaim, that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lodebar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim,
