The Book of Joshua

Chapter 4

1

And it came to pass, when all the people were clean1 passed over2 Jordan, that the LORD spake4 unto Joshua, saying,2

2

Take3 you twelve 6240 men out of the people, out of every 376 tribe a man,

3

And command16 ye them, saying,2 Take3 you hence out of the midst of Jordan, out of the place where the priests' feet stood firm,53 twelve 6240 stones, and ye shall carry them over52 with you, and leave52 them in the lodging place, where ye shall lodge4 this night.

4

Then Joshua called4 the twelve 6240 men, whom he had prepared52 of the children of Israel, out of every 376 tribe a man:

5

And Joshua said4 unto them, Pass over3 before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of Jordan, and take ye up54 every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel:

6

That this may be a sign among you, [that] when your children ask4 [their fathers] in time to come, saying,2 What [mean] ye by these stones?

7

Then ye shall answer1 them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off8 before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it passed over2 Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off:8 and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever.

8

And the children of Israel did4 so as Joshua commanded,14 and took up4 twelve 6240 stones out of the midst of Jordan, as the LORD spake14 unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over55 with them unto the place where they lodged, and laid them down55 there.

9

And Joshua set up52 twelve 6240 stones in the midst of Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests which bare6 the ark of the covenant stood: and they are there unto this day.

10

For the priests which bare6 the ark stood6 in the midst of Jordan, until every thing was finished2 that the LORD commanded14 Joshua to speak15 unto the people, according to all that Moses commanded14 Joshua: and the people hasted17 and passed over.4

11

And it came to pass, when all the people were clean1 passed over,2 that the ark of the LORD passed over,4 and the priests, in the presence of the people.

12

And the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh, passed over4 armed before the children of Israel, as Moses spake14 unto them:

13

About forty thousand prepared7 for war passed over1 before the LORD unto battle, to the plains of Jericho.

14

On that day the LORD magnified14 Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared4 him, as they feared1 Moses, all the days of his life.

15

And the LORD spake4 unto Joshua, saying,2

16

Command16 the priests that bear6 the ark of the testimony, that they come up4 out of Jordan.

17

Joshua therefore commanded17 the priests, saying,2 Come ye up3 out of Jordan.

18

And it came to pass, when the priests that bare6 the ark of the covenant of the LORD were come up2 out of the midst of Jordan, [and] the soles of the priests' feet were lifted up8 unto the dry land, that the waters of Jordan returned4 unto their place, and flowed4 over all his banks, as [they did] before.

19

And the people came up1 out of Jordan on the tenth [day] of the first month, and encamped4 in Gilgal, in the east border of Jericho.

20

And those twelve 6240 stones, which they took1 out of Jordan, did Joshua pitch52 in Gilgal.

21

And he spake4 unto the children of Israel, saying,2 When your children shall ask4 their fathers in time to come, saying,2 What [mean] these stones?

22

Then ye shall let your children know,52 saying,2 Israel came over1 this Jordan on dry land.

23

For the LORD your God dried up52 the waters of Jordan from before you, until ye were passed over,2 as the LORD your God did1 to the Red sea, which he dried up52 from before us, until we were gone over:2

24

That all the people of the earth might know2 the hand of the LORD, that it [is] mighty: that ye might fear1 the LORD your God for ever. 3117
